I first heard Mwiza Simfukwe while doing a story on Sofar Sounds and loved his jazzy, smooth style. Playing his signature yellow Dobro, with his Tracey Chapman-esque voice and beautiful falsetto, his music was immediately appealing.
As I began this Creatives Portraits project, I knew he was one of the creatives I wanted to shoot. Anyone his age who helps keep any form of jazz alive has my attention. Soon thereafter, he posted on Facebook that he was trying to get to Louisville to try out for American Idol. It seemed like a perfect match. I could help him out with publicity and make a portrait at the same time. He doesn’t fly, so we met at the bus station before his trip.
He spent his first 10 years in Africa but has adapted well to being in the States. He reports that he continues to be sh,y even on stage. Indeed, his personality is soft and warm.
In the middle of the shoot, someone came out of the bus station looking for a $5 handout. All Mwiza had was a $10 bill. The man agreed to go and get change for him, promising to return soon. Of course, he never did. But it is a lens into the world of Mwiza's innocence. The road to fame and celebrity is cobbled with deceit and shams.
Aspirations to be the next American Idol aside, what an inspiring young man. His awesome Dobro got stolen on his trip to audition. Hegott another guitar to perform and never made it to the top, but has persevered. He currently plays in the jazz duo Smoove Jamz.
