Tampa Pride Brings Together a Community of Unity
Participants in the Tampa Pride Diversity Parade celebrate on 7th Ave in Ybor City
Tampa Pride and the LGBTQ+ community brought their vibrant celebration to Ybor City on Saturday for a full day of festivities. The event featured a bustling Street Festival with an Artisan Fair, food trucks, and a lively after-party, Pride at Night, which included a concert at the historic Cuban Club.
The highlight of the day, the Tampa Pride Diversity Parade, transformed 7th Avenue into a dazzling display of LGBTQ+ pride, unity, and advocacy. Glittering floats, thumping music from marching bands, and an enthusiastic crowd dressed in rainbow-themed outfits filled the streets, waving flags and signs promoting equality and inclusion.
Tampa Pride has deep roots in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. In the 1990s, the city’s pride celebration was known as PrideFest, but it struggled for recognition and funding amid resistance from local politicians, particularly at the county level. By the early 2000s, the event had faded. However, in 2014, community leaders and activists revived the celebration, leading to the first Tampa Pride Parade and Festival in Ybor City in 2015. Today, Tampa Pride stands as one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in Florida, alongside St. Pete Pride.
Ironically, some of the same government agencies that once resisted PrideFest now actively participate in the parade—tossing beads, donning rainbow attire, and ensuring their presence is felt among constituents. Need more Pride? The St Petersburg Pride Festival happens on June 1!
