One Year Later- The City Remembers Ybor Shooting Victims
A crowd of over 100 people gathered for Ybor Night Out in the 1920 Ybor music venue in remembrance of the lives lost and those who were injured in a shooting incident one year ago in Ybor City. The violence on the weekend before Halloween 2023 took the lives of 20-year-old Harrison Boonstopple and 14-year-old Elijah Wilson. Sixteen others were injured in the shootout. 22-year-old Tyrell Phillips was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The trial is still pending.
Mayor Jane Castor, Police Chief Lee Bercaw, State Attorney Susan Lopez, and the Boonstopple family spoke, acknowledging the courage of the first responders and Ybor security teams, the resilience of the survivors of the shooting, and encouraging one another to stay strong. The Boonstopple family wore matching shirts with images of Harrison. His mother, Brucie, spoke of his life, his challenges, and his fortitude.
After the remembrance, several police officers, including the chief, escorted participants on a walk down 7th Avenue to demonstrate the historic district's safety.
