A Farm in Downtown Tampa? Yep, Meacham Urban Farm Has Sprouted!
As part of the huge Encore mixed use development project, bordering east downtown Tampa and Ybor City, Meachum Urban Farm planted it’s roots in a back corner lot. After three years of planning and construction the farm store is now open to the public and the fields are yielding a healthy crop. The first day I visited most of the crowd looked to be walking from local residences.
In Summer 2020 three greenhouses were raised and vegetable plots planned. The idea, according to their website, is to become an agriculture hub and education farm in the heart of Tampa Bay and the Encore community. They grow clean, organic vegetables for their CSA (community supported agriculture- shareholders), farm store and local restaurants.
The sprawling rows of vegetables and herbs along with the large greenhouses is quite a sight in the middle of urban downtown, nestled right next to I-275. Tended by three farmers Joseph Dalessio, Kristen Beauvois, and Travis Malloy the place looks like a plot straight out of Green Acres. The threesome bring a variety of experience to the mix, with Joseph and Kristen also helming Black Finger Farms in Lutz, and Travis heading up Trail Bale Farm- raising animals in natural, humane, environmentally beneficial manner.
Go visit! The folks there are super friendly, the vibe is very laid back, and the produce, meat, and store products top notch.
