Kelly Stevens started Nude Nite in 1997. It’s a pop-up exhibition of nude artwork with the underlying cause of changing how people see themselves. She attempted to bring body shaming into the light after recognizing a deeper issue nudity played in the art world. Through the years, it grew to include burlesque performances, body painting, and interactive installations encouraging attendees to gain insight into themselves and their bodies.

I was assigned to photograph the experience starting in 2010, and every year also captured a portrait of Kelly during the show. She was smart, had a dynamic spirit, and a larger-than-life presence. I looked forward to photographing her every year.

In 2020, I asked if she would sit for a formal portrait, and we pulled this set together. It included elements from that year’s Nude Nite theme, “Imagine We Are One,” about peace and mindfulness, and was based on John Lennon’s song Imagine. Her shirt, which says “What the fuck is Nude Nite?” provides insight into her awareness of the public’s view of the show.

We lost Kelly to cancer in 2022. The world is a lesser place without her voice, encouragement, and enthusiasm.
